[character history / background]: Mao is introduced as a young Huma boy with amnesia that controls the Force of Fire. Force is a power that was previously only found in Gajuma, allowing the users to control an element of some sort, whether it is something cliché like fire or something as strange as Force of Rainbow. When the King substitutes his own life to emit his Force on the Setting Sun of Ladras, Force awakens in both Gajuma and Huma alike where it had been dormant, thus birthing Huma Force Users. Though Mao is a bit of an exception, but we’ll get to that later.

During the Setting Sun of Ladras, Mao’s Force of Fire supposedly awoke and went out of control. It was at this time that it was assumed that he lost his memories. Eugene Gallardo, at the time Commander of the King’s Shield, names him and takes him in, enlisting him into Karegia’s military as one of his subordinates. Due to the fact that Eugene had saved him, Mao is indebted and follows Eugene wherever he may go. This holds true when Eugene is exiled from the military due to a certain incident, and Mao is labeled as a deserter when he follows after him, even though Eugene told him to stay. Eugene is also very much a father figure to Mao, which is reiterated time and again with how Mao cares for him.

He embarks with Eugene on a journey to find other Force users in order to unveil the truth surrounding the Setting Sun of Ladras and what caused the disaster. When the game begins, he and Eugene are arriving in Sulz to recruit Veigue Lungberg for their cause. Veigue is found sitting in a building covered in ice, watching over Claire, his childhood friend, who is encased in ice. Mao beats the crap out of Veigue to get him to listen, since he’s obstinate as hell. Veigue discovers that Mao has power similar to his own, and they explain that this power is ‘Force’. Mao melts the ice around Claire.

With Claire returned to normal and introductions made, Claire invites them to eat and then heads off for home. Eugene and Mao mention to Veigue that they need to talk to him about important matters, and request that they talk somewhere calm. They head off to Claire’s house to talk and let Mao eat, since his appetites seems to hinge on how much Force he uses. After a long explanation of the world’s events up to date, Popura, a Gajuma living in Sulz that acts as an Aunt to Claire and Veigue, charges into the house with a peach pie to celebrate Claire’s un-icing. After the pie distraction, Mao and Eugene request Veigue’s help in uncovering the truth behind the disastrous state of the world. Veigue declines.

The conversation is interrupted when Claire’s father runs in to report that a group of armed people has entered Sulz. Mao and company rush out to find Tohma and Saleh of the Four Stars. They are searching for beautiful Huma girls. Saleh and Tohma kidnap Claire. Mao, Veigue, and Eugene leave Sulz in order to rescue her.

While journeying, Mao fills out the party’s Battle Book, proving that beyond being a happy chatterbox, he is surprisingly responsible about keeping up to date with everything that they encounter. But, of course, that doesn’t keep him from humming and singing while he fills it out. He refers to it as a way of ‘making memories’, since he doesn’t have any of his own from his past.

After crossing over the Great Larulen Bridge and meeting the Dark Wings for the first time in a comical confrontation, they stay at the Keketto Hostel for the night. Mao is heard to be having strange dreams, mumbling about the ‘the power of seven’ and ‘I am the eyes’, though upon waking he forgets what he dreamed - this is a reoccurring event throughout the game until Mao learns about who he is. When the party wakes, the innkeeper, who is under Waltu’s Force of Sound manipulation, attacks them. Waltu is another member of the Four Stars. They meet with Waltu outside. Waltu says that Huma girls are being collected by orders of Queen Agarte and that the girls are safe. They hurry away from the hostel to save Claire.

They continue on, encountering the Dark Wings on Etoray Bridge for another comical encounter, though this one is a little less funny. This encounter with the Dark Wings, who now wish to be known as the Dark Fangs (amusingly referred to as Tooth Decay by Mao), leads to them blowing up the bridge to stop the party’s progression to Minal. They are forced to change their route and head through the Northern Alvan Mountains.

After a great bit of leaping and Force using, they take a break in a cabin that’s on the mountainside. Mao and Eugene force Veigue to rest before they can move on. There’s serious conversation-ing about Force. They rest and continue on through the mountains.

Once passing through there, they reach the Minal Plains where they seem to be going around in perpetual circles due to some very odd weather such as rain and snow. Finally, Mao deduces that the unusual weather must be caused by someone’s Force. They encounter Annie Barrs, another Force user and the daughter of the doctor whom Eugene killed, finally shedding some light on the incident which exiled him from the military. Annie attempts to kill Eugene. She’s unsuccessful, but that doesn’t stop her from stabbing him about a dozen times. Annie passes out from exhaustion and her massive bitchfit. They take her to Minal to find a doctor.

They hurry onto Minal, and meet Misha while they’re looking for a doctor. Misha tells the party to wait wait in the Inn while he goes to get Dr. Curia. After learning she’ll be fine, Mao and company leave the inn, saying that Annie was simply a stranger that they found collapsed in the rain, though Mao completely blows this cover as he’s leaving the room when he says “Take care of Annie~”

They go to the port in Minal to board a boat, only to discover that the military has stopped all ships from leaving. Mao is revealed to be a rather excellent liar when they attempt to dodge the suspicions of a soldier, claiming that Veigue is his brother and Eugene is his bodyguard and how they need to get to Balka to search for their mother. Eugene is rather miffed by being called a servant. A man named Tomichi offers them a boat, but he seems pretty shady so the party reconsiders. They then notice a man struggling with moving a box that has the mark of the Karegian army on it. They offer their assistance in hopes of sneaking onto a military ship, and head back to the port with the parcel. Mao lies again, telling the soldier that they’re doing work in Minal until the port is re-opened. Once on the ship, they notice the entire sea has been blockaded with ships, thus foiling their plan.

They head back to town to brainstorm, and Misha approaches them. He asks ‘the one with the scary face’ if his name is Veigue, and says that a patient of Curia’s mentioned that he might come to Minal. Veigue goes to the inn to question Curia about it, since he’s positive that it was Claire. Curia demands an explanation before she says anything, because they seem suspicious. Eugene explains the situation to her, but Veigue doesn’t really care, since he’s worried about Claire. Claire left a message with Curia telling Veigue not to ride a boat. Eugene suggests that Saleh and Tohma are probably gathering more Huma girls. Annie wakes up and after several inconsiderate words later from one Annie Barrs about how she doesn’t want a Gajuma like Misha touching her and telling him to stay away, Misha freaks out and runs out, followed by Curia. Mao is confused by Annie’s racism, because as far as he’s concerned, Huma and Gajuma are all people. But Mao disregards her, more worried about Misha.

The party leaves the inn to find Misha, but run into Curia. She hasn’t found him. She then explains that Misha’s mother told him to stay away and abandoned him when his Force went wild on the Setting Sun of Ladras. She doesn’t want his Force to run wild again because of what Annie said.

Though usually cheerful, Mao is extremely worried for Misha and is shown to be a bit insecure at this point over his loss of memories, wondering if perhaps his parents also abandoned him when his Force went berserk. After a scene with Misha, Misha flees to the beach and they rush after him only to find that Misha’s Force has run wild and he’s summoning Viruses with his Force of Fang. Annie comes to help. They check on Misha a final time before leaving town. Eugene suggests that Annie join them, and after much reluctance, she tags along to unearth the truth behind her father’s murder. They leave Minal with their newest companion, setting their destination for Petnadjanka under the assumption that the King’s Shield is still kidnapping girls.

After one confusing forest labyrinth and Mao falling down a crumbling ledge, they arrive at Petnadjanka only to find the town utterly silent. Upon investigating, they discover that the factory in the town is overrun with plants and the citizens are in a panic. Saleh and Tohma are still up to their thieving ways, this time stealing a girl named Selena and the mayor explains that a Force user is going wild inside the factory. So the group decides to infiltrate and confront Tytree Crowe. After calming Tytree (as calm as he can be, anyway), the group heads back out of the factory to meet with the mayor who apologizes profusely about Selena being taken. Tytree, quite obviously attached to his sister much like Veigue is with Claire, decides to join the group to rescue the taken girls. Mao is quite excited to have a talkative companion join them, since Veigue and Eugene keep terrible company. Eugene suggests that they head to Sannytown, since that would be the most likely place for the King’s Shield to go if they want to take a ship to Balka. So off to Sannytown they head. Tytree mentions that they should stop by the Toyohose Hostel to take a ‘boat’ (read: raft) to get to Sannytown.

Upon arriving at the Toyohose Hostel, they learn that the rafting service is currently non-operational, a plot by Saleh to halt their progression. The party offers to collect wood to repair the destroyed raft while also collecting food for them to eat, because Tytree claims t be able to cook. Gugura begins work on the raft while they eat. There’s a confrontation a small while later after the party (except Veigue) eats with a couple of guys that tried giving Tytree some poison to give to his companions. The party begins laughing uncontrollably, with the exclusion of Veigue since he didn’t eat any of the ‘poisoned’ food. Turns out Tytree had the party pick the incorrect mushrooms, and they ended up eating a particular type of poisonous laughing mushroom. With everything settled, they hop onto the raft and head down river to Sannytown.

After arriving at Sannytown, they head to the port only to learn that this one has also been blockaded by the military. Tytree berates the soldier when he won’t dish out any information about the King’s Shield’s movements. Veigue stops him while Annie and Mao try to cover for his outburst. Again, Mao displays his amazing lying skills, explaining that Tytree’s girlfriend recently dumped him and his stress caused his outburst. Where he comes up with these ideas, no one’s really sure. They head back to town. A woman confronts them about Huma girls going missing. She explains that her daughter Hilda was kidnapped and implores the party to search for her as well. So off they go in the direction the woman instructed. Right to Tel Alla Hostel and into a trap.

The party meets the aforementioned daughter and she begs them to help her, saying that the King’s Shield is after her. Hilda explains that Claire and Selena helped her escape. Mao senses a disturbance in the Force outside, and Hilda pleads that they save her. They walk directly into a trap when they go outside to face Tohma - Hilda attacks them from the back. They learn she’s a member of the King’s Shield. They fight.

After failing to beat the crew, Tohma calls her an impurity and whisks off her turban to reveal a pair of broken horns. Hilda freaks out and tries to cover them. She is a Half, both Gajuma and Huma. Tohma ridicules her more. Hilda freaks out some more and her Force goes out of control while Tohma leaves. The party fights her again. Hilda passes out from exhaustion, and the party takes her back to Sannytown to rest.

In the inn, the party has a serious discussion about race. Annie mentions that Half births are difficult and that the child usually gets sick easily and is weak. Mao concludes that Hilda must be fortunate to have at least been able to grow up, rather than die as an infant – optimistic as usual about the circumstances. Tytree agrees, but Annie doesn’t. Screams from outside interrupt their conversation and Mao senses another disturbance in the Force. They rush out of the Inn.

They meet Militsa, a member of the Four Stars and also a Half. She is trying to recapture a girl who has escaped. She splits into several clones with her Force of Rainbow and attacks the party before continuing her chase. The party starts to search for her but is attacked by Militsa and her clones again. They devise a way to destroy Militsa’s mirage using Mao’s fire and Veigue’s ice. Militsa flees, but the crew chases after her and is joined by Hilda, who tries to reason with Militsa. Militsa refuses to reason and attacks the party again. Once she’s beaten, she disappears. Veigue asks Hilda to join them, and she finally agrees. The party searches for the girl that Militsa was chasing. When they find her, she explains why she was being pursued and what happened in Karegia Castle with the Queen. Afterwards, a soldier makes an announcement about the ‘Day of Gorbha’, which will commemorate Queen Agarte’s debut, saying that all ports will be blockaded except for the one in Babilograd and travel to Balka is prohibited until after the ceremony. Mao wonders if collecting girls and Agarte’s debut are related somehow. The party decides to head to Babilograd, and to do so they must cross through Kurodadaku Desert.

Upon arriving in the desert, Tytree ends up falling down an old well while he’s complaining about the heat. Mao begins a eulogy for him, answered by an outraged Tytree from below. Tytree informs the party that there’s water down below. The group climbs down to see what Tytree’s babbling about. Tytree managed to stumble upon Karez, an underground waterway to transfer water to desert town wells. They proceed until they find a dead end. Eugene destroys the rocks in their way. When he does so, sand and Viruses fall from above. They fight it and then continue on. Annie begins showing symptoms of being sick. They climb back up to the surface to take a take a break in the sun and let Annie rest. Annie insists she’s fine, though Mao has his doubts. They continue until they’re out of Kurodadaku Desert, where they plan to head to Anikamal for a short rest before journeying to Babilograd. Annie passes out as they’re leaving the desert. They hurry to Anikamal to find a doctor.

Once in Anikamal, they take Annie to the inn so they can look for a doctor. Pretty much everyone in the town blows them off and won’t help. Finally they meet Frantz who is will to listen to them. He offers to examine Annie. Frantz gives them grave news after the examination. Annie will die from the illness she has if they don’t get the cure to her quickly. The town of haters hears about her condition and tries to kick the group out of town. They flee to Frantz’ tent with Annie. Frantz tells them about the cure and where to get it. With a sick Annie and a Frantz in tow, the crew heads off to the oasis. Mao worries about taking Annie along since she’s sick.

Once they’ve gotten the horn, they return to Anikamal request a dark room to use. Instead, they have rocks thrown at them for coming back. The village tries to throw them out again, but finally the innkeeper agrees to let them have a room. Annie is cured and they can leave the hater village. Tytree passes out momentarily due to mild sunstroke, which is easily cured with a block of Veigue’s ice to his face. That all done, they head out for Babilograd.

To get to Babilograd, they must go through the Climber’s Cavern. Mao feels another disturbance in the Force, and they wonder if it’s going to be an ambush. They meet the comical trio of the Dark Wings/Dark Fangs once again, though they now insist on being called the Dark Claws. However, they don’t pose much of a threat this time (not that they did any other time) as one of them is injured. Annie bandages his leg up and the Dark Claws flee the scene, declaring that they’ll pay back the debt of being saved. As they leave the cavern, Donnell, a Force user from King’s Shield, encounters them. He is under orders by Saleh to kill the party. Obviously, he fails to do this. They move onward to Babilograd while Mao mocks Donnell’s way of speech.

Babilograd has an odd faith where opposite sexes aren’t allowed to conversate unless it’s with people in their own family and the women must cover their faces. To get to the port, taking a lift is required, so the party heads to the lift. Waltu, however, is manipulating the lift manager. After a great deal of searching, they manage to break Waltu’s manipulation and are able to head down to the port. Here they find Selena and several other girls that have been kidnapped as well as Waltu and Militsa. They attempt to use the girls as leverage, but the party fights anyway. Milhaust shows up and puts a stop to it all.

Tytree is reunited with his sister, and they take the chance to ask about Claire. It turns out Claire was on the previous ship that left three days ago, so Veigue is unable to rescue her. Tytree and Selena have a sibling moment before the party boards a ship to Balka. Upon arriving, they leave port to head to the actual city, intent on rescuing the girls from the Castle. They sneak into the Castle via a forgotten emergency escape, but nothing goes as planned.

The party gets thrown in jail designated for Force users when they confront the Queen and her aid Zilva. The Dark Wings show up after a while of everyone bitching and free the party to pay back their debt. But that’s not good enough; the party has to free absolutely everyone from the prison. They had back to Balka to infiltrate the Castle. Again. They’re short on time since the ceremony for Agarte’s debut is going to start soon, and Claire seems to be playing an important role in it. They free several rooms of girls, but Claire is nowhere in sight. Finally they learn that she’s been taken to the ceremony. So they head up to the roof of the Castle to save her. They encounter Saleh and Tohma on their way up. They beat the crap out of him and then sicken him with their ‘power of the heart’ speeches until he snaps. They run into Waltu and Militsa too. Mao and company stay behind to distract them while Veigue rushes on to the roof. It’s too late, as Agarte has already started the ritual to revive the Annointed King and switch her body with Claire’s.

Geyorkias starts spouting off at the mouth about the eradication of Humas to create peace. Obviously, this doesn’t sit well with the heroes, so they try to take him out. Because his power wasn’t properly and fully awakened, he’s defeated. Veigue leaps in to save Claire, whom is actually now Agarte, and Agarte is presumed to have died in the aftermath of Geyorkias.

The party separates to go their own ways now that Claire has been saved and the nefarious plans have been stopped. But something strange is going on in the world now that they’ve gone home. Gajumas are acting violently towards Humas due to an ‘impression’ that was supposedly released by Geyorkias. The state of affairs between the races is deteriorating rapidly.

Eugene is also affected by the impression, and he locks himself in the Mesechina Cavern much to Mao’s dismay. He’s constantly screaming out the names of his companions, and Mao begs Annie to bring everyone to him so he can stay and watch over Eugene. A while later, everyone but Hilda returns to the cavern, and Mao is at the end of his rope by now. He’s on the verge of breaking down, not knowing what to do to help Eugene.

When they enter the cavern to speak with Eugene, Eugene begs Veigue and Tytree to kill him, because if they don’t he’s going to kill them and other Humas. Mao flips out at his request. They all but drag Mao out of the cave to discuss what to do. When Tytree suggests that they might actually have to kill Eugene, Mao flips out again at the mere idea of it. Annie suggests that there may be a medicine to help Eugene, and Mao begs the party to go obtain while he continues to watch over Eugene, since oddly Eugene is unaffected by his presence.

A while later, the party returns with the medicine, and Mao seems greatly relieved by it. But he’s still completely on edge about Eugene’s state of mind. They head back into the cavern where Eugene locked himself up and Mao opens the cell. Mao tries to make him take the medicine, but Eugene is out of control. They have to fight him to stop his berserking. Mao is completely against fighting, but they have no choice. Once the fight is over, Mao administers the medicine and asks it if it worked. When Eugene confirms it, Mao breaks down on him, finally unable to keep it together anymore. It’s blatantly apparent how important Eugene is to him.

On their way out of the cavern, they break down a thin wall and find some stone monuments with Ancient Karegian written on them. They see a familiar symbol that Hilda remembers from Razilda and they learn that beating Geyorkias might have been a mistake. So off to Razilda they go to investigate the crest.

The enter the inn in Razilda, but the flag that was hanging has been changed to the Huma crest, rather than Razilda’s crest. After back and forth talks with the Gajuma and Huma leader, they learn the history of the town while obtaining their individual crests and the anthems they live by. It all comes down to the ‘Power of Darkness’, which is revered by the Humas but feared by the Gajumas. Though the town had been built on unity, it fell apart over this dispute and the impression that is affecting the Gajuma has strained the relations of the town even further. They head back to the inn to mull over this and figure out where the Power of Darkness is. The two crests act as a map and the party uses it to locate the fabled Power of Darkness. They use the anthems and the lake drains to reveal the resting place of Eephon, one of the six Sacred Beasts. Eephon speaks to them briefly before telling them to enter.

The party works their way through the place as Eephon is putting Tytree through trials. The rest of the party isn’t really aware of what’s going on with the illusions that Tytree is seeing, but Hilda guesses right when she suggests that the Sacred Beast is testing him.

Finally, after several Tytree trials, they arrive in the room where Eephon resides. Eephon tests their strength in battle, and once he is beaten, his bestows his Power of Darkness on Tytree and is awarded with the Emerald of Darkness. Eephon gives some brief explanation that the Sacred Beasts are against Geyorkias’ ideals and that Veigue and company need to purify the thoughts of the people. He also gives a hint about where the next Sacred Beast can be found, and the party deduces that it is the Shilbena Wasteland, so they head for Pipista.

They would like to research Eephon’s hint, which referred to ‘the sleeping wings’. They must rescue Hack, an acquaintance of theirs, and consult him about it. Hack explains that the Holy Bird in the Sacred Altar room is also drawn on the ground in the Shilbena Wasteland. So the party goes out to investigate the drawing. They light a series of altars and call forth a tower. Fenia, the Sacred Beast of the Burning Tower, speaks with them briefly at the entrance, and Mao finds her voice and the tower to be familiar.

As they enter the Tower, Mao is plunged into his first trial. It’s a white screen with Mao mumbling about his birth and asking who he is. Eugene appears and gives him his name, and Mao is happy about his name. But Fenia’s voice intrudes on the flashback, asking him if he really is Mao and asking him who he is.

Mao wakes up from his flashback for a moment and assures the party he’s fine and they continue on, until he’s plunged into his second trial.

It’s another flashback, to when his Force was going out of control in Karegia Castle. Mao is asking “Who am I-” Saleh tries to kill him, but Eugene jumps in the way of the attack, saving him. Mao’s Force calms down, but he’s still asking “Who am I?”

He wakes up from the flashback again and brushes off the trial.

He’s tossed into his third Trial – a black screen with the Sacred Beasts floating around. Fenia’s voice is telling him to awaken and look at the world. She also mentions “You are of us, yet we are not you. You came from us, yet you are not one of us. You are you, none other than yourself.” She goes on to say, “There is nothing for you to think about. You need only feel. Your eyes are our eyes. Your ears are our ears.” She explains that the Sacred Beasts will view and experience the world as he does, but his heart is his own and to walk to on his own two legs. These are Mao’s truly earliest memories. There is nothing prior, since the Sacred Beasts created him. All of his dreams suddenly make a lot of sense.

The trial ends, and Mao questions Veigue about who he thinks he is. Veigue assumes Mao has regained his memory, but Mao simply brushes it off and they continue on.

His next trial begins. It’s a black screen with the Sacred Beasts floating around on it. They’re discussing what’s going on in the world and the fate of the world. This is the discussion that led to the creation of Mao. Fenia creates Mao from her image, and is therefore something of a mother to him.

The trial ends, and Mao is finally realizing what his purpose actually was. They continue on to Fenia’s chamber. Mao gets to meet his mommy. Mao finds out his name is actually ‘Orselg’, but they agree to call him Mao. Fenia explains his creation, and Mao questions what he is since he isn’t a Sacred Beast or a person. Mao becomes insecure about his existence, which will become apparent later on. Fenia gives him her Power of Fire. Mao tells the party he’s got his memory back, but won’t talk about it. Fenia acts motherly about Mao, and Mao jokes that Fenia is his mother. They have a family moment after the party leaves her room. They leave the tower and Mao has his first dream about his mother. Mao starts mumbling about his existence in skits.

They head to Razilda to consult with Hack about the location of the next Sacred Beast. The party has to save Hack again because he goes in search of the Power of Darkness with Iga, the Huma chief - Fogma, the Gajuma chief, is out for his life for trying to resurrect the Power of Darkness.

The town’s relations deteriorate further, causing Milhaust and the Karegian army to intervene. After consulting with Hack, the party heads off for Kyogen in search of the next Sacred Beast. Claire in Agarte’s body hears where they’re headed, and decides to follow.

Once in Kyogen, they learn of the Garden of Illusion and meet up with Frantz again. Frantz suggests that the party talk with Wan Gin about it. Wan Gin makes a trade – the party must act as bodyguards for his auction in turn for info regarding the Garden of Illusion. Agarte, in Claire’s body, is asked to entertain guests. However, they actually try to auction her off. Bandits crash the auction and kidnap her, taking her to Kyogen Hostel and the party must save her.

The party returns to Kyogen, but aren’t able to get information out of Wan Gin. His assistant Kuhou informs the party of a place called Nolzen that has a similar legend. So off they go to Nolzen.

Eugene is acting strange, so they pop into the inn for a rest. Eugene leaves the inn for fresh air, and suspiciously enough Mao senses a disturbance in the Force shortly after. The party rushes outside to find Eugene beating the crap out of Viruses. Mao’s slightly frightened of the power Eugene is exerting. Afterward, they head off to Nereg Tower, where they suspect the next Sacred Beast is.

Nereg Tower turns out to be a lie, with Saleh and the Dark Wings laying in wait. After a ridiculous battle with the Dark Wings, the comical trio sees the error of their ways and become good guys. The party also sees the tower that they actually need to go to in the distance. They drop back in on Nolzen, which is now under the command of the Karegian army due to racial disputes. They go to port to get a boat, but the harbor has been shut down in the process of securing the city.

The party meets up with Curia and Misha in the city, and Curia agrees to negotiate with the army about a boat. However, a group of viruses attack the town, and various Gajuma are injured in the ambush. The party rushes off to help tend to the wounded. Annie lets a Gajuma die due to her grudge against Eugene that had blossomed into full-on hatred. After realizing her stupidity, she uses Hilda’s Force of Lightning as a defibrillator to revive him. After helping the town, they take a boat for the Beo Plains for the next tower.

Wontiga puts Annie through several trials as they work their way through the tower. Annie finally discards her racism and Wontiga gives her the Power of Wind. After meeting with Wontiga, the next Sacred Beast Shaorune possesses Mao to tell Veigue to hurry to Belsas. The head back to Nolzen to grab a boat to Belsas.

After arriving in Belsas, the crew goes to a meeting being held in the town. However, this meeting is actually to be a public execution of Queen Agarte (aka Claire in her body) to make a statement. Claire gives a speech about the insignificance of race and how there’s no race when Humas and Gajumas are eating peach pie. Veigue realizes it’s Claire in Agarte’s body and leaps into save her before she’s beheaded. Milhaust shows up and Agarte (in Claire’s body) flees the town. Shaorune possesses Mao again to inform the group that he’s in Babilograd.

They head off to Babilograd, and Veigue faces his trials as they make it through the temple. Shaorune gives him the Power of Water and tags along with the party. Shaorune drops a hint about the next Sacred Beast. The party meets with Frantz in Nolzen and he mentions Mocrado.

They head off to Mocrado, a small village. There, they meet Hilda’s mother and some shit goes down with Tohma, resulting in her mother’s death. They move onto the Alvan Mountains at the hint of an old lady in Mocrado. Hilda faces her trials at the Stone Ruins and Gilione gives her the Power of Light.

They head to Sannytown after learning that it’s the Island of Illusion, and Eugene goes through a very small trial where he overcomes the impression. Randrigz gives the Power of Earth to Eugene.

With all the Sacred Beasts, they purify the impression in people’s thoughts. But nothing is ever that easy. The world is still as racist as was previously. The group then jumps from town to town trying to suppress the racism. Agarte (in Claire’s body) is doing this as well.

When they go to Balka, Veigue’s Force goes out of control due to doubts about Claire. The party fights him. Tytree then takes him to the beach, and they have a fistfight. Soon after, Claire (in Agarte’s body) leaves town and Agarte (in Claire’s body) joins in her place. They move on to Sulz to suppress the racism there too - this time with a couple dozen Aunt Popura peach pies.

On their way out of Sulz, Razilda sinks due to the overwhelming negativity of the town. They converse with the Sacred Beasts and then head off to revive Geyorkias to convince him of their ideals. So off to Mount Sovereign they go. The Four Stars intercept the party at the entrance. This leads to Saleh and Tohma killing one another after the fight, Militsa and Waltu switch sides and leave. Their next encounter is with Zilva, the perpetrator of it all. They fight her and then revive Geyorkias. The party learns that the impression was actually spread by Yuris. They must now enter Grunhelde, Yuris’ realm, to defeat him. The hatred in people’s hearts weakens them and their Force while in Grunhelde.

As Viruses start ambushing towns, the people begin to work together to defend their homes, thus lifting the epic amount of hatred. The party starts gaining strength from the power of love and acceptance of the Gajuma and Huma now standing side by side. Agarte is finally able to use her Force of Moon again. Claire and Agarte switch bodies once more. They fight Yuris, using their warm and fuzzy feelings of love and acceptance at their strength, and banish him and his realm from the world.

They have a final conversation with the Sacred Beasts, in which the Sacred Beasts entrust the world to the Humas and Gajumas. Mao is unsure whether or not he belongs in the world or if he should leave with the Sacred Beasts. Fenia tells Mao it’s his decision, and Veigue says he belongs – he chooses to stay. He has a final family moment with Fenia. Agarte passes away from exhausting her power. They vow to change the world with love and acceptance. Mao and Eugene begin traveling together again.

[character abilities]: Mao uses the Force of Fire, is able to cast various elements of magic, and uses two tonfa in close range battle. He has dual mystic artes with everyone on the party. After he receives the Power of Fire from Fenia, he is able to cast Blazing Hearts, which is one of his ougis. He also controls a Force Cube, which allows him to sense when there is Force nearby, being used, or going out of control. It is believed that his considerable awareness to the use of Force is due to the fact that he’s the creation of the Sacred Beasts.

[character personality]: Mao is a hyper, seemingly carefree boy. He doesn’t seem to be bothered about his amnesia often, simply saying that the present is what matters most, and as long as he’s having fun he doesn’t need to worry. Throughout the game, however, time and again Mao is shown to be a little insecure about his memory loss, up until he meets Fenia and learns he was created. From that point on, his insecurities concentrate on his existence and if he really belongs.

Mao comes up with various creative lies within the game, a very childish trait that really speaks his age. He also enjoys coming up with short little songs that are inspired by the most random things, like leaves falling or snow melting. He became very attached to the first person that he can remember meeting, Eugene. He views him very much like a father figure, and is fiercely loyal to Eugene since he saved him. When Eugene is in trouble, Mao truly becomes very childlike in the way he feels so lost without his parent figure around. He considers the rest of the party to be like family to him.

[journal post]: Watch your step~
Don’t fall in~
You’ll get wet, wet~

Ah- this fountain doesn’t look very familiar, does it Eugene?

…Eh? Eugene? Where’d you go? I thought you didn’t like hide-and-seek~

Well! I’ll find you anyway~

[third person / log sample]: “Very well. We shall take our leave from the surface,” Geyorkias’ voice seemed distant to Mao as he continued to talk.

The Sacred Beasts were leaving. What… did that mean for him? Veigue had said that humans should walk on their own two feet, without help from the Sacred Beasts, but- he’s not really a human, so where is should he go? Should he leave with the Sacred Beasts? But he’s not really one of them, either…

What should I do…? Mao wondered. He doesn’t really belong anywhere, so what’s going to happen to him? Is he allowed to stay, or does he have to leave? Where does he really belong? And if he stayed, wouldn’t that mean he would never see Fenia again? They’d be separated; but- he really wants to stay with everyone.

Why does he have to choose? …Does he even have a choice?

He doesn’t want to feel helpless like this. It’s his life, so he should be able to choose, right? But… He’s not like anything else in the world, so maybe it’s not okay for him to be there. But he doesn’t want to be taken away from all of his friends and Eugene- Eugene had taken such good care of him, he was the first person to defend him. He gave him a name and took him in, he couldn’t imagine leaving him. And everyone else, he’d gotten to be such good friends with so many people. He didn’t want to be different; he just wanted to be a person.

Why did he have to be different? Why did he have to remember that he was? Why couldn’t he just be normal like everybody else? But… that wasn’t really fair to Fenia. How could he blame her for telling him the truth? If it hadn’t been for her, he wouldn’t be here at all. It simply came down to asking, didn’t it?

“…I kinda have a question. What’s going to happen to me when you all disappear from this world?”
